christmas was pretty decent, got quite drunk and was all holly and jolly and the like. friends engagement parties and the like also quite decent. for christmas i got the american psycho book from my brother's fiance, so he's chosen well there. finished reading the book, and it god damn rules. my favourite chapter/segment/whatever: 'Confronted by Faggot'. What made that even better was the next chapter/segment/whatever was titled something like 'Murdered Kid at Zoo'. What's not to love?

so i'm currently in the process of packing up all my junk to move to our too hot/too cold nation's capital and all i wanna do is go bowling. so in a bit, im going bowling. but first i gotta go to garden city and trade my new shoes for a smaller pair of the same shoes :( it seems my feet haven't even grown since i last bought a pair of shoes (probably years ago...) how appalling. and completely surprising.

Seeing Death Proof at a Drive-In on Wednesday taught me some new things and reminded of some old things. New thing: drive-ins fucking rule, old thing: Tarantino fucking rules. That's basically it.

on wednesday night i saw grinderman/nick cave, only did i really? it's like the riddle about a tree falling in the woods. if a craig gets his drink spiked and loses his entire memory, did grinderman really make a sound? i'm guessing so, but it makes ya think...

so anyway, got my money stolen, lost the shirt i was wearing and, luckily, left my phone in the cab, so the cabbie could give me some details when he brought it back for me the next day. seems he had to grab my driver's licence to find out where "home" was, because i was unable to elaborate. shirtless and out of my mind, i payed the cabbie $4.30 of the $35 fare. i have absolutely no memory of anything beyond finishing my second beer (which i had left on the ground next to me while i drank my first) and seeing the very beginning of the show. this was around 8.45pm? and i got home according to parents at 1:30am. somewhere in between i lost all my money, picked up a random assortment of bruises and aches n pains and lost my shirt. so if you saw some shirtless mad hatter staggering about the valley at midnight on wednesday, you'll have to excuse his behaviour...he wasn't quite myself.

Why does the phrase "Oh, I'm ok thanks. Just lookin" confuse girls who work in shoe stores so much? I woulda thought the only reasonable reply to that phrase would be something like "Ok", or "Cool", or "No worries", or, if they really want to push it, "No worries, but if you need me, I'll just be over there." What is a totally unacceptable reply as far as I'm concerned is "Ok...so what are you looking for today?" followed by a blank stare.

Girls of shoe/clothing stores everywhere, if I want your help I'll ask. Chances are I'll never ask, cause I'll never want your help. I don't wanna hear about what brand names the kids today like, I don't wanna hear about what shoes your brother wore to his job interview. I want you to fuck off and leave me alone. This is why I hate shopping. Even when they're not talking crap, they perch themselves just over your shoulder waiting for the chance...Pick up a shoe and they just fucking start again...Example:

*Craig picks up shoe*
"ohh yes, that is a nice shoe"
*Craig tries to hide annoyance at annoying bitch* "yeah. it seems ok."
"blah blah blah that's a good price blah blah"
"yeah. it seems a little...big"
*girl rolls eyes* "Shoes come in different sizes"
*Craig does well to conceal rage* "Uh..yeah..I mean..the shoe..is big..bulky..heavy...I don't like this shoe."

So girl grabs other shoes to 'talk me through'. I'm not buying a car, I'm buying a fucking shoe. Well, I guess I'm buying two of them.

This happens at every single fucking store you walk into. I guess that's why online shopping is so popular.

09:02 pm - Errant Package
So last week a simple knock at the door brought with it magic and wonder the likes of which have never been seen. It was a Fed Ex package. A Fed Ex package addressed to me. Intrigue. I opened said package and therein lay a quite odd looking DVD, titled 'Joshua's Famous Step by Step Party Dances'. At first I wasn't interested, but the DVD case recommends viewing from ages 1 to 100. As I sit in this age bracket, I decided to look inside. There it was, a shiny CD with 'You Know What You Did' written above a little 'Q'. The design of the 'Q' was something familiar, something...from the past...

Turns out the CD contained a tune recorded by the Queens of the Stone Age for the upcoming album 'Era Vulgaris'. The song, a damn fine song I soon discovered, also features the talents of one Trent Reznor, of NIN fame, fortune etc. It also turns out the song won't actually be appearing on the new album, despite being recorded for it and really, being pretty damn good. So, without further rabbiting on, here's a link to where you can download it:

Now folks, the boys and girls at QOTSA Land only sent out like 50 of these little packages. One of them arrived at my doorstep. Sorry, but I just had to brag about that.

Today I reported to my Jobseeker training as directed, as I have now been receiving partial (I DO work a little...)Newstart Allowance (dole) for the past three months. Halfway through the day I got up and left as their computers are junk and refused to load the webpage I needed to fill out my application for some Graduate Recruitment gig. I announced I was going home and walked out. Hard to the very core. Strutting down the road, feeling every bit the manliest of men, I saw the space where I had earlier that day parked my car was just that. A space. It was car park, sans car. Sans MY CAR. A few enquiries failed to turn up anything of note and, thus,it seems the reasonable conclusion that MY CAR GOT STOLEN. I shoulda told the police the items of value in my car were some Creedence tapes, a cassette player and a briefcase. But I didn't.

Fuck life's hard at 8 Mile.

Well in the time since I last made a post here nothin much has happened really. Well, I saw Eagles of Death Metal, which was the first time I had been genuinely drunk in about 8 months, and quite enjoyed it. The Moustache sure does know to rock n' roll. It's hard not to be impressed by the manic nature of his grin as he goes about his business. Clearly loves to rock socks off, and does it well. Disappointed there was no 'Solid Gold' or 'Miss Alissa', but they made up for it I guess by playing a splendid cover of 'Brown Sugar'.

Other than that, the golfing and bowling continues, as does the work at Suncorp Stadium, the work at Interactive Publications (which is getting quite interesting), the gyming, and the online gambling. Other than all that...I watched Amelie for the first time in a very long time last night. It never fails really.

In the last week and a half I've read four manuscripts in full, one of them twice. No doubt there's worse ways to work away. The last one I read, which I didn't actually complete, was outstanding. I really wanna find some time at work this week to see how it ends. Well, it's set (kind of) in World War Two, so I guess I already do kinda know it ends...

Even though there will be no Pixies for me this week, I'm still a little excited...hmmmm...

I guess I can see a photo or two and hear tales of cool

07:44 pm - the week in review
went to the beach, went to the gym a bunch, had my first day as an assistant editor at IP, finished watching Oz, bought a bowling ball, named the bowling ball "Julie", 'I.B.S' won both their games of league bowling, played some golf, worked at suncorp stadium, declined the invitation to attend some XXXX Brewery function (held in conjunction with Suncorp Stadium), that's about it really. Grandad was admitted to hospital today and, according to dad, "doesn't look real fit," so I'll have to see how that pans out...

In times recent I've began my involvement in a bowling league that, with the exception of myself and my teammate, is entirely middle-aged. That's ok I guess, I dunno what else I expected...So, 'I.B.S' kicked their season off with a narrow victory last week and will be hoping to build on this momentum come Tuesday night. In times recent I have also resumed work at Suncorp Stadium, which is good as I get just enough work to make it worthwhile, but not quite enough to make it impact on my Newstart Jobseeker Allowance. So, living at home without rent/food worries, I've been flush enough with funds to buy a bunch of dumb shit, like the Dumbo DVD, beach cricket gear, and a totally awesome framed Blues Brothers Revue poster. Also, in times recent, I have seen Eric Clapton perform live which, while possibly not the life-changing experience it may have been 30 years ago, was certainly a thrill.

Having just completed a day of golfing and just learned my friend's little brother, in my memory an excrutiating 13 year-old brat, has just moved into the college i once inhabited, it has also occurred to me in times recent that I am getting on. Although I may well have cancelled that effect out by yesterday watching, and thoroughly enjoying, my recently purchased Dumbo DVD. I also watched the original (and easily the best) Terminator film, in which Arnie is truly hard to his robotic core.

12:26 pm - Jokes
So, as we speak, I'm listening to a podcast of some UK interview with Mark Lanegan and Isobel Campbell, who recorded the quite decent album 'Ballad of the Broken Seas' together a while back. For some reason they've only just started touring and promoting it, but that's beside the point. The point actually is, this joke Mark tells the lovely Isobel at the end of the interview:

ML: Why did Jesus cross the road?
IC: err...i dunno.
ML: Well...cause the Romans were whipping him...and hitting him with rocks.
IC: aaahahahahaha...is that a real joke?
ML:...yeah, that's it.
IC: aaahhahahahahahahah.

Beck - Nausea
Foo Fighters - Marigold (Acoustic Live)
Eagles Of Death Metal - I Want You So Hard (Boy's Bad News)
Isobel Campbell/Mark Lanegan - Ramblin' Man
Red Paintings - Pickles
Saboteurs - Level
Sonic Youth - Incinerate
Wolf And Cub - This Mess
Yo La Tengo - Mr Tough
Panda Band - Musical Chairs

i voted for these songs in JJJ's Hottest 100 countdown for the year that was. Half of these songs I really like, the other half are by bands I like and I think I probably like. Meh, voting gives you a chance of winning...whatever the prize is.

It's stunning that I get to vote for Marigold in 2006 actually, considering it's been one of my favourite Nirvana/Dave Grohl songs for years...
